GEORGE TOWN: An estimated 300,000 devotees, about 50% less than last year, will be making their way to the island for the three-day Thaipusam celebration starting on Saturday.
The state had a record crowd of more than 600,000 devotees last year, after SMSes and e-mails were circulated urging people to boycott the Batu Caves Thaipusam celebrations over the temple committee’s alleged role in getting police to disperse a crowd there on Nov 25, 2007.
