KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Rakyat has decided to field a PAS candidate in the Kuala Terengganu by-election.
PAS deputy president Nasaruddin Mat Isa said the decision was made after discussing the matter with Pakatan Rakyat partners PKR and DAP.
“We will have a central meeting on Dec 21 and will decide on the candidate,” he said.
The relevant subcommittee will be established in preparation of the by-election, he said, adding that PKR and DAP had given their support.
The seat fell following the death of Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail, 59, who collapsed while playing badminton in Genting Highlands last Friday.
Nasaruddin said that the party would use the normal procedure in the party in nominating the candidate.
“The division will suggest the candidate to the state and the latter will bring it to the central committee,” he said.
Nasaruddin said the by-election is likely to be in January since Hari Raya Haji is next week, followed by Christmas, coupled with the monsoon season and floods.
If the Election Commission decides to have it earlier, the date for deciding the candidate would be brought forward, he said.
On the party’s expection of the by-election, Nasaruddin said, “We hope to win.”
On whether Mat Sabu would be the candidate in the by-election, he said he was not sure until the nomination comes from the division.
“Terengganu will have its own meeting today (Tuesday) and I am sure there have been nominations from the divisions to the state,” he said.
