ALOR STAR: A suspect in a robbery and rape case died after hanging himself in the Alor Star police headquarters lockup.

The man, in his 20s, from Kulim was under remand from Nov 21-27 to help in investigations into armed robbery and rape cases that occurred here and in Kulim.

Kedah CID chief Assistant Comm Zakaria Ahmad when contacted said that the man hanged himself using a towel between 3pm and 5.30pm on Saturday.

He said the body was sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital mortuary for post mortem on Saturday night.

He said that police are investigating the case as sudden death.

The man’s mother S. Kanaghambal, 54, said that she was informed of her son’s death on Saturday night by two policemen who went to her house at Taman Lobak Paya in Kulim.

She said that she was told of her son being arrested by police on Thursday.

However she said that she did not know the reason for the arrest.

“He called me before he was arrested telling me that he wanted to give me some money,” she said when met at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital mortuary here on Sunday.

Kanaghambal said that she would wait for the post mortem report before taking any action.
