KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno Youth is all for a debate among contenders for the movement’s top post.
State Umno Youth secretary Mohd Joh Wid said a debate among the three candidates Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo and Khairi Jamaluddin would enable party members and the people to know them better.
It would allow candidates to share their ideas and vision, Mohd Joh said yesterday.
Mohd Joh, the Sepanggar Umno Youth chief, said a debate should not be perceived as an opportunity for contenders to embarrass each other.
Rather, it should be seen as a platform for them to showcase their talents and ability, apart from voicing their ideas, he added.
“I am sure Umno members and Malaysians at large will not merely assess candidates of their public speaking ability but more importantly their ideas, vision and how they are going to achieve them,” Mohd Joh said.
Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Deputy Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah also supported having debates for candidates vying for the top posts.
The candidate for the supreme council post said by participating in open debates, the people could gauge the quality of the candidates.
“We have to move to a new phase in politics, where a candidate is not only measured by his ability to campaign, but also his ability to voice his opinion and his clarity of thought.
“The people have the right to find out what kind of leaders Umno had chosen to represent them,” he told reporters at Parliament lobby.
Among those who had agreed to debates were Umno Youth chief aspirant Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo.
