KUALA LUMPUR: The Peninsular Malaysia Road Transport Officers Union wants the Road Transport Department (RTD) to conduct a comprehensive operation to eradicate the ticket touts menace.

The union wants officers to go undercover and be equipped with handcuffs to deal with “aggressive” touts.

Union president Hamzah Masri said this was necessary as the touts’ activities had become widespread giving rise to a “ticket-touts em- pire” in the federal capital, especially at Hentian Pudu Raya. He said a heavier sentence should be imposed on touts to deter others.

Yesterday, the traffic magistrate’s court fined an Indonesian, Saiful Mukhtar, RM10,000 or 11 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to being a tout. — Bernama
