BUTTERWORTH: The Election Commission (EC) should instruct all employers, especially factory management in Permatang Pauh, to give their employees time off to cast their votes on Aug 26.
PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said the commission should write letters to the employers, directing them to abide by the law.
“There is a provision under Section 3(n) of the Election Offences Act that says that any attempt to prohibit a person from voting is an offence. Those found guilty could be jailed two years or fined RM5,000,” he said during a public talk in Pangsapuri Idaman on Saturday night.
Shamsul said he was surprised that the commission had selected a working day for the by-election.
He noted that many by-elections in the past were usually held at the weekend.
“We hope voters in Permatang Pauh will get time-off to fulfil their duty in choosing their MP,” he added.
