KOTA KINABALU: Former state Cabinet minister Datuk Askalani Abdul Rahim is expected to challenge Datuk Shafie Apdal for the Semporna division chief post in October.

Askalani, a former secretary-general of the now defunct Usno that formed a coalition with the then opposition Parti Bersatu Sabah in 1993 after Umno spread its wings to Sabah, said that his intention to contest was to strengthen the party's democratic process.
