Police bust illegal horse-racing betting syndicate

JOHOR BARU: Police busted an illegal horse racing betting syndicated dealing with RM120mil worth of bets monthly from local and foreign clients.

They made several arrests and seized an array of items.

Acting on a tip-off, a squad of policemen led by Asst Supt Mior Fahim Ahmad raided a room at a hotel located in the city at about 4.15pm on Sunday.

Police arrested six locals, including a woman, aged between 27 and 46, as well as three foreigners aged between 30 and 46.

Among the seized items were seven computers, 24 mobile phones and three horse-racing guidebooks.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said that the syndicate was dealing with RM10mil worth of bets when the raid occurred.

“Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate has been in operation since April," he said.

He said that one of the foreigners arrested had past records for being involved in illegal horse-racing betting.

He added that the case was classified under Section 6(3) of the Gambling Act 1953.
