THE Government has paid out RM358,000 in ex-gratia compensation for medical negligence cases in public hospitals between January and June.
Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said there were four cases of medical negligence involving public hospitals this year.
“Of this, we have managed to reach settlement in three cases. In 2006, the year that ex-gratia payment was initiated, there was one medical negligence case involving RM25,000.
“Last year, there was none,” he told Tan Kok Wai (DAP – Cheras).
To a supplementary question from Tan, who complained that payment was too low, Liow said the rate was based on a calculation formula provided by the Attorney-General’s Chambers based on legal precedent.
“However, we can review the payment on appeal,” he said.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng told Lim Lip Eng (DAP – Segambut) that the Government paid out RM2.9bil to various toll concessionaires as compensation for not increasing their toll rates.
“PLUS, which runs the North-South Expressway, received some RM2bil in compensation alone while the concessionaire for Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong received RM630.4mil, for the Kesas Highway in Shah Alam RM150mil and for the KL-Karak Highway RM98.4mil,” he said.
