KUALA LUMPUR: Adibah Amin and Lydia Teh have been named winners of the fiction and non-fiction categories for The Star-Popular Readers Choice Awards 2008.
Adibah's bestseller This End of the Rainbow was voted the top book by readers from Popular's top 10 fiction titles, while Teh's Honk! If You're Malaysian was voted the top book from the non-fiction category.
For the fiction category second place went to Kam Raslan for his book Confessions of an Old Boy: The Dato' Hamid Adventures, while Lim May-Zhee was voted third for her Sweetheart from Hell.
In the non-fiction category, Adibah took second place for As I Was Passing while Amir Muhammad was third for his book Malaysian Politicians Say the Darndest Things.
Teh said she did not expect to win.
I really want to thank my readers for voting for my book. This (award) has inspired me to produce more best-sellers,'' she said after receiving her award from Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here yesterday.
Adibah was not present at the event.
Accompanying Ong were Popular Bookstore executive director Lim Lee Ngoh and Star Publications (M) Bhd marketing services senior manager Iris Tan.
Popular Bookstore and Star Publications (M) Bhd collaborated on the English category awards while the bookstore worked with Berita Harian for the Bahasa Malaysia awards.
The winner of the fiction category (Bahasa Malaysia) was Anis Ayuni for her book entitled Bayangan Rindu, while Datuk Dr Mohd Fadzilah Kamsah and Fadzli Yusof bagged the non-fiction category for their book Kuasa Hijrah Kuasa Untuk Berubah.
The Star-Popular Readers Choice Awards 2008 was held in conjunction with Popular BookFest Malaysia 2008. The event is organised by Popular Book Company Malaysia Sdn Bhd with Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd and the MCA LifeLong Learning secretariat as the co-organisers.
