SIBU: A contractor and his wife have been arrested for possession of more than 60 imitation guns and ammunition at their home in Jalan Belatok here.

Federal CID director Datuk Comm Mohd Bakri Zinin said the weapons, believed to be have been smuggled in, looked genuine.

“Although the guns are imitations, they can kill when used with the imitation bullets. Police are investigating whether similar weapons are in the market,” he told reporters during an official visit here.

Comm Mohd Bakri said police were probing the case under the Firearms Act 1990, adding that the couple have been released on bail.

On the progress of Ops Cantas Kenyalang launched last year to eradicate the gangsterism problem in the state, he said 20 of the 43 gang leaders now under detention were from Miri.

He said two of them were arrested here last week and police were still hunting for another 10 who had gone into hiding outside the state.

He said the gangsterism problem was more serious in this town, and that gangsters were involved in various criminal activities like collection of protection money, illegal logging and extortion.
