MALACCA: The body of a man believed to have drowned while fishing in the Malacca River was found Monday morning by divers from the Fire and Rescue Services Department.
Fire Department and Rescue Squad operations chief Baharum Mohd Hashim said the body of Sabahan Lasius Pinaau, 24, was found at 10.30am by divers near the Jalan Panglima Awang bridge.
"The victim was found still clutching his fishing net three metres underwater close to the spot where an eyewitness said he was seen to have disappeared under water," he added.
A total of 15 divers and two boats were involved in the search on Monday morning.
His body was taken to the Malacca General Hospital for a post mortem.
On Sunday, Pinaau was casting his net close to the Panglima Awang Bridge at 1.30pm when it got stuck to a tree branch. He jumped in to untangle it but drowned while crossing the river after freeing it.
A search was mounted to look for the body later that evening but was called off owing to much rubbish and debris in the river.
