Wholesaler charged over deaths

IPOH: A vegetable wholesaler was charged with killing a family of five who died in a fire in Taman Song Choon here last year. 

Daniel Loke, 39, was brought before magistrate Mohamed Ruhizat Abdullah yesterday to answer the charge, nine months after his detention under the Emergency Ordinance for suspected involvement in the May 31 fire.

He was charged with five counts of murdering his ex-wife Chai Mooi Fong, 31, her husband Tan Wei Limm, 30, her father Chai Kar It, 65, grandfather Chai Kim, 91, and cousin Lim Kian Hwa, 28. 

The murders were supposedly committed at their home in Lebuh Rapat Baru 13, Taman Song Choon, Kampung Rapat here at 3.30am. 

No plea was recorded from Loke, who wore a sweat suit with a hood to hide his face from photographers earlier. 

The magistrate granted the prosecution’s request to transfer all five cases to the High Court to be mentioned at a later date. 

Loke faces the death penalty if convicted under Section 302 of the Penal Code. 

Lawyer Datuk Daniel Tay represented Loke while Pokok Assam assemblyman and lawyer Yee Seu Kai held a watching brief for the families of the deceased.
