PENANG: The Penang Famous Street Food Fest held in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Penang Starwalk attracted more than 5,000 visitors including foreigners.

The visitors were spoilt for choice as there were 30 stalls selling Penang's “best of the best” hawker fare at the Penang International Sports Arena (Pisa) in Relau last night.

An American tourist who wanted to be known only as James said the event gave him a chance to learn about local dishes.

“I learnt about the fair through the newspaper. I decided to come here with my wife. We're glad that we came,” he said.

A group of Northern Indian tourists were seen enjoying local dishes.

The response for the fest was so overwhelming that Pisa was flooded with hawker food buffs.

Of the 30 hawkers at the event, 12 are listed in the Famous Street Food of Penang: A Guide and Cook Book published by Star Publications.

A total of 400 line dancers entertained the visitors with an hour-long performance. Belly dancers also captivated the audience with their gyrating moves.

The ambience was jazzed up with hip-hop, break dance and street jazz performances. Cha cha, rumba and Latin dance dominated the second session of the show.

Visitors were also pleasantly surprised with the prizes offered during impromptu quiz sessions and games.

The Star Rfm deejay posted questions related to contemporary songs, apart from songs from the 80s and 90s that are usually played by the station.

Among the prizes offered were 50 Firefly tickets to various domestic destinations, The Star mugs and stationery.

Lucky winners took home a 32-inch LCD television set, CD players, cookers, microwave ovens and micro hi-fi players, among others.

Starwalk 2007 organising chairman and Star Publications regional director (north) Datuk Seri Kamal Hashim said the response from the public had been overwhelming.

“This is the first time we incorporated a food fare in conjunction with Starwalk,” he said.
