KUALA LUMPUR: A market helper was charged in a magistrate's court with stealing and failing to produce his MyKad.

Ironically, Mohd Zaki Isnin claimed that he had shoplifted to raise money to replace his lost MyKad

“I wanted to get a replacement for my MyKad but to do so, I needed RM100,” said the 31-year-old man from Malacca in mitigation after pleading guilty to committing the offences around 6.30pm on Sept 30 at Watson’s in Jalan Sultan Ismail.

He stole eight boxes of Olay products worth a total of RM286.40 from the store.

Prosecuting officer C/Insp Muhammad Mohd Jais informed the court that Mohd Zaki had a previous conviction for theft and asked that he be given a fitting sentence.

Magistrate Tasnim Abu Bakar sentenced the accused to eight months’ jail and a stroke of the rotan for the first charge and four months’ jail for the second one.

She also ordered the sentences to run concurrently.
