BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The state Customs Department seized about RM2mil worth of smuggled liquor from a container lorry.

Kedah Customs Department director Ahmad Mahir Abdul Manaf said the seizure of over 100 boxes of wine, rum and vodka was made at about 10.30pm on Monday near Bedong.

“We received a tip off that a container lorry carrying smuggled items was seen leaving the Changlun industrial area and heading south.

“A team of five Customs personnel from here immediately searched the North-South Expressway for the vehicle,” he told a press conference Thursday.

He said the team found the container lorry travelling towards Sungai Petani on the Alor Star - Sungai Petani road and followed it for several kilometres before overtaking it near Bedong.

Ahmad Mahir said the 37-year-old driver could not produce any document for the liquor which was worth about RM316,000.

"The tax is estimated around RM1.7mil,” he said.

Ahmad Mahir said the driver had been remanded for five days until Sunday. The investigation was being conducted under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.
