Police arrest senior gang member in Kuching

KUCHING: Police have arrested the most senior member of a gang who is on the wanted list of Ops Cantas Kenyalang.

Sarawak CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the man, known as Ah Fatt, 35, of the Sibuti Gang, was detained at a house in Tabuan Jaya here at about 3.30pm yesterday.

He said Ah Fatt, the 30th person arrested under the operation, had been actively involved in crimes such as extortion, collecting protection money and involvement in an illegal lottery syndicate.

“The suspect is detained under Section 3 (1) of the Emergency Ordinance 1969. Police have the right to detain him for 60 days before he is charged in court,” he said.

Earlier this week, police arrested six men aged between 19 and 38, under the same section of the Ordinance for allegedly being involved in gangsterism. They are believed to be remnants of the Lee Long and Miri Taxi Terminal groups.

Since the launching of Ops Cantas Kenyalang, police have detained 30 gang leaders and their henchmen. – Bernama
