KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of a serial rapist said yesterday she felt sad and ashamed whenever her relatives talked about her son's behaviour.

“I was really shocked when I heard about him being a serial rapist,” said the 47-year-old woman after Ismail Shah Abdul Wahab, 24, who is already serving a 50-year jail term for sex offences, was sentenced to another 30 years and ordered to be whipped 10 times by the Ampang Sessions Court yesterday.

She said when she first asked her son about the rapes, he simply answered that he did not know what was happening to him.

The antique dealer's mother, who was present in court during the verdict, said she had always thought of him as a soft-spoken and caring son.

“He has never raised his voice at me, and has always cared for my feelings,” she said.

She said Ismail Shah had never been violent to his son or his wife who works for a hotel in Penang, adding that his friends were also puzzled by his crimes as he had undergone enough religious education.

Judge Noradidah Ahmad sentenced Ismail Shah to 20 years’ jail and six strokes of the rotan for raping a 15-year old girl and another 10 years and four more strokes for forcing her to perform oral sex on him.

She, however, ordered the jail terms to run concurrently after he completes serving his 50 years’ imprisonment for sexual offences committed earlier.

(On Jan 16, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court had sentenced Ismail Shah to a total of 50 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the rotan for committing rape, sodomy and forcing one of his victims to perform oral sex. He was sentenced to an additional 10 months’ jail for illegally confining one of his young victims).

(The Ampang magistrate’s court had on Monday sentenced him to five years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for molest, robbery and abduction. The jail term will run concurrently).

Before sentencing, Noradidah said she took into consideration public interest and Ismail Shah’s previous convictions for similar offences.

“He had raped an underaged girl after asking her for directions to a mosque. His action is inhuman,” the judge said in her verdict.

Noradidah said she felt that a longer jail term would be appropriate for Ismail Shah because he was not fit to mix with society.

“If he is allowed to return to society, the court is concerned that he will repeat similar sexual offences again,” she added.

Ismail Shah, who bowed his head throughout the court proceedings, appeared relaxed.

Earlier, the court was told that the accused had stopped his car near the girl and asked for directions to a mosque at about 4.50pm on Aug 19, 2004.

Threatening her with a screwdriver, he forced the girl to get into his car and drove her to the bushes behind SMK Hulu Klang where he then forced her to perform oral sex and also raped her.
