JOHOR BARU: More than 100 students and trainee teachers got a taste of something different here – cheerleading.

And they got expert tips – from the Cheerleading Association and Register of Malaysia, and its team, the Charm All-Stars at a clinic held here on Saturday.

The main hall of Institut Perguruan Temenggong Ibrahim was packed with student enthusiasts from 11 schools, and trainee teachers majoring in physical education.

They were all gearing up for the “Cheer 2007” National Cheerleading Competition to be held in June.

The clinic began with a make-up demo by the sponsors, Silkygirl of Alliance Cosmetics.

Charm All-Stars then briefed the participants on the rules and regulations of the competition.

Silkygirl assistant brand manager Ng Su Si said the participants did well.

“I’m impressed to see such enthusiasm,” she quipped.

Led by captain Lim Chee Wei, the team then demonstrated stunts and basic cheerleading moves during a two-hour session.

Expert tips: An instructor conducting an exercise for the over 100 students from all over Johor who attended the starter clinic in Johor Baru on Saturday.

“Everyone had a very good attitude,” said the 21-year-old Lim, who is a performing arts student.

Among the “first-time” cheerleaders were Nadzri Mustaffa of Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar.

He had one concern though – not enough boys seemed to be interested in cheerleading. But the 15-year-old refused to be discouraged.

“If women can become policemen, then men can become cheerleaders,” he reasoned.

Yesterday, Charm All-Stars entertained shoppers with a special performance during a road show held at the Johor Baru City Square.

On June 15, a cheerleading clinic will be held at the Geodesic Dome in Komtar, Penang, and at the Dewan De Kelana in Petaling Jaya on June 19 and 20.

The regional competitions, Cheer 2007 North and Cheer 2007 South, will be held at the Geodesic Dome and Stadium Bandaraya, Johor Baru, on June 16 and 17 respectively.

The national competition is set for June 23 and 24 at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Cheer 2007 is organised by The Star Youth 2, sponsored by Silkygirl and supported by the Education, and Youth and Sports, ministries. SuriaFM and 8TV are the official media partners.
