KUANTAN: A man who set himself on fire during a standoff with police on Wednesday is now fighting for his life.

Ahmad Faiz Shamsudin, 25, who is believed to be mentally unstable, was warded with 85% burns on his body shortly after the incident in which his house at Kampung Seri Kemunting was razed. He is in critical condition.

During the incident at about 6.45pm, the man caused a commotion in the housing area by setting his house and himself on fire.

His mother, who was inside, managed to run to safety in the nick of time.

Earlier, he had been seen wandering around the neighbourhood with a sickle.

When police arrived, he locked himself in his house, resulting in a standoff that lasted almost two hours.

“Family members claimed that Ahmad Faiz was mentally unstable and had records to show that he had sought psychiatric treatment at HTAA but we have yet to obtain any document to verify his actual condition,” OCPD Asst Comm Jasmani Mohd Yusoff said.
