WORKS Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu lashed out at an Opposition MP for claiming that some of the ministry’s problematic projects have not taken off.

“Tell me which failed project we have not fixed? You like to talk a lot. Don’t you have any other work to do? You keep repeating and going back and forth.

“Is your head full? Did you not sleep last night? You are closing your ears,” Samy Vellu told Dr Tan Seng Giaw (DAP - Kepong) during question time.

Earlier, Dr Tan had asked if the ministry’s projects were really successful.

“Look at the Martrade building. Even the Alor Star Hospital – it has been years but it is still not fixed. Is the money not enough?” asked Dr Tan.

Samy Vellu said he did not have a list of failed projects but all projects by the ministry were implemented despite a few glitches in the implementation stage.

He said that from 1990 until the end of last year, 9,235 projects had been successfully implemented, adding that records showed that 180 contracts had failed and been terminated.

Samy Vellu also said that until last year the North-South Expressway concessionaire PLUS had collected RM15.91bil in toll – RM9.87bil more than the cost to build it.

However, it only made a profit of RM4.03bil after taking into consideration the building and maintenance costs.

The 50-year concession started in 1988. Up to last year, the maintenance cost amounted to RM5.94bil, Samy Vellu said in a written reply to Teresa Kok (DAP – Seputeh) and Tan Kok Wai (DAP – Cheras).

Samy Vellu said the total toll collections for all 19 highways until last year was RM23.656bil and the overall cost to build them was RM18.93bil.
