PENANG: Researchers should have tie-ups with foreigners and not limit their partnership to locals in an effort to commercialise their research findings.

Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said not everyone could see the value in a research finding.

Discussion: Kong (second from left) speaking to some of the participants at the conference in Penang on Tuesday. Looking on is Prof Dzulkifli (left).

“But if someone does and it is a foreign company which knows how to use it, why not?” he said after opening the 4th ENGAGE European Union-Southeast Asia ICT Research Collaboration Conference on Tuesday. Kong, noting that the European Union (EU) was offering research grants for researchers on information technology, urged local researchers to take up the opportunity by engaging an EU partner.

Universiti Sains Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said the university received a RM25mil grant under the science fund for about 30 research projects.
