IRAQ’S unravelling continues, beginning this week with President Jalal Talabani’s arrival in Teheran on Monday for talks with his counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. For its part, Iran is trying to organise talks with Syria and Iraq to sort out the latter’s growing mess.

Then today, President George W Bush meets Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Amman for the same thing, after talks in Europe yesterday. But al-Maliki’s shaky government needs the support of Iraqi Shi'ite leader Muqtada al-Sadr for parliamentary support, which Muqtada said he would refuse if the meeting with Bush went ahead.
