KUALA LUMPUR: There is confusion over which lawyer is representing the two policemen charged with murdering Altantuya Shaariibuu.
It started as soon as the proceedings began yesterday when DPP Salehuddin Saidin introduced the lawyers.
He first introduced Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah and M. Puravalen as counsel for political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda who is charged with abetting the two policemen in committing the crime.
DPP Salehuddin then introduced Zulkifli Noordin and Juanita Johari as counsel for C/Insp Azilah Hadri and Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, Ahmad Zaidi Zainal and Shaun Tan Kee Shaan as counsel for Kpl Sirul Azhar Umar.
Tan was then heard uttering that he was representing both policemen while DPP Salehuddin continued introducing Karpal Singh, Sangeet Kaur Deo and Ramkarpal Singh who were all holding a watching brief for Altantuya's family.
Later, Zulkifli sought clarification from High Court judge Justice Abdul Kadir Musa, claiming that Tan was never appointed.
“I have letters from both the accused from prison to prove it,” Zulkifli said.
Justice Abdul Kadir, at this point, tried to calm things down to avoid embarrassment for any party but Zulkifli pressed on.
“I'm sorry to say but Tan should have acknowledged that he was never appointed and stop making public statements that he is representing both accused,” Zulkifli added.
Kamarul Hisham then stood up to say the matter would be resolved when the case was called for mention in Shah Alam on Dec 14.
Tan told the court that he had asked the two policemen if they had appointed any new lawyers when he visited them on Wednesday and they had said “no..
He then challenged Zulkifli to prove the signatures on the letters were genuine.
“I don't know what is going on between the counsel and the family but the accused themselves should be the ones who appoint their lawyer. They can tell everyone on Dec 14 who they really appointed,” Tan said.
