A WITNESS protection programme in the works promises to bring much relief to citizens who want to inform the security services but currently do not dare to come forward. They fear intimidation prior to trials and criminal retaliation after giving evidence.
In the United States, the Witness Protection Programme (WITSEC) is already well-established and since its inception in 1970, 7,800 witnesses and 9,900 of their family members have taken advantage of it. They relocate their families, new documentation is given them and some may even be trained for new jobs. It is like being born again, with a new name and a fresh family history.
