KUCHING: Sarawak has launched a brand name and logo for local cottage industry products as a guarantee of quality and to boost their marketing potential.
Called “Sarawak Best,” the logo features a distinctive hornbill design and will be given to products that meet certain criteria.
These include having a unique Sarawakian identity, competitiveness, compliance with food safety regulations and good hygiene practice, use of local raw materials and having consistent and reliable production.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Fatimah Abdullah said the logo represented official recognition of the quality of cottage industry products.
“This will enhance the image and standing of our products and help them compete not only in the local market but also overseas,” she said.
She added that products would be assessed by a committee comprising various agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM), Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, and the Sarawak Craft Council.
To date, 34 products including snacks, handicrafts and ceramics have been given the Sarawak Best logo.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who launched the logo here yesterday, called on cottage industry entrepreneurs to maintain the quality of their products so that Sarawak Best would become well known throughout Malaysia and even in other countries.
He also urged them to equip themselves with marketing know-how to improve the popularity of their products.
Besides the logo, Taib also launched an online database of cottage industry entrepreneurs in the state as well as the Sarawak Cottage Industry Association.
