KUALA LUMPUR: From Sept 1, touts and third parties are banned from driving commercial vehicles to Puspakom inspection centres nationwide.

The move is to give Puspakom, which has been hit with allegations of corruption, a clean image.

Its chief executive officer Salamat Wahit told The Star that from next month all commercial vehicles going for inspection must be driven by their designated drivers or staff of the transport company.

“The drivers must prove they are bona fide employees before the vehicles are checked.”

Currently, some lorry owners and transport companies pay between RM120 and RM300, depending on where the vehicles are checked, to touts to arrange for the inspection.

In some cases, touts would charge more for their services as they claimed certain Puspakom officers had to be “greased” to get the vehicle certified as roadworthy.

Salamat said such allegations had tarnished Puspakom’s image.

He said there were also cases of transport companies being issued with fake inspection certificates after using the services of touts and third-party drivers, which resulted in them being unable to renew their road tax at the Road Transport Department.

“Their actions have given our officers and centre a bad name. We want to set the record straight and correct the perception of what our centre has to offer and does.

“We cannot allow touts or third-party drivers to continue tarnishing our image. This has to stop.”

He said the bi-annual inspection at Puspakom was straightforward and user-friendly.

“Any driver can drive to Puspakom to get a vehicle inspected,” he said.

He said all Puspakom needs are the vehicle registration card, its previous year inspection certificate and a staff tag or supporting document to verify the status of the driver as a bona fide employee of the transport company.

Salamat said they have customer relations officers to help and guide the driver at Puspakom.

“It takes about an hour to go through the process. The results of the inspection will be handed to the driver as soon as the tests are completed,” he said.
