PETALING JAYA: The proliferation of temples in the country was due to the large number of Indians, predominantly Hindus, brought to then Malaya in the early 19th century by the British to work as labourers.
They were tasked with clearing the jungles for development, to build roads and work on the railways and to tap rubber in large plantations owned by British companies.
