KUALA LUMPUR: The current sugar shortage could have been contributed by big industries getting their supplies from domestic sources instead of overseas because of the sharp price increase in the international market.
Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk S. Veerasingam said these industries started buying from the local market when the price shot up to between RM1.80 and RM1.90 per kg in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines which had open sugar markets.
