Guide book on Penang hawker fare out soon

PENANG: Food lovers and tourists will soon have a guide and cook book featuring some of the state’s most-popular hawker fare. 

Some 30 types of street food are identified in the book, aptly titled Famous Street Food of Penang – A Guide & Cook Book

The book, which has the endorsement of the state government, identifies the most-popular stalls selling the hawker fare and tells the success stories of the hawkers. There are also recipes for those who want to prepare Penang-style food at home. 

State Tourism Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow, in his speech at the soft launch of the book at the E&O Hotel here yesterday, said the state was known for its food not just in the country but also around the region.

“The book will definitely help us market Penang to the world. For locals living outstation, it will give them a chance to try out these recipes in their own kitchens,” he said. 

Exclusively sponsored by the E&O Group and published by Star Publications (M) Bhd, the book’s first run will see 10,000 copies being printed for sale nationwide next month. 

E&O Group managing director Datuk Terry Tham, whose speech was read out by E&O Hotel manager Mike Saxon, said the Group was extremely proud of its humble beginnings in Penang and was committed to highlight the state’s unique attractions.
