IPOH: Courage, creativity, foresight and hard work are crucial for one to become a successful entrepreneur, said Perak MCA chief Datuk Ong Ka Chuan.

“When we look at a young successful entrepreneur, we only see his or her success.

“We don’t see the courage, creativity, foresight and hard work which the person has put in,” he said.

If a person possessed some of those qualities, they could be successful even in the midst of a crisis, he added.

Ong said this yesterday in his opening speech at the first of a series of Glocal Entrepreneurship seminars organised by the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Malaysia (PUMM). His speech was read by Perak MCA organising secretary Dr Mah Hang Soon.

Ong cited as example, a couple in India who had made it big when they decided to recycle the heaps of discarded plastic bags in their village.

“The couple decided to make handbags out of the plastic bags. The items were later sold in departmental stores,” he said, adding that their venture also created job opportunities for others in their village.

Ong also noted that in the United States, abandoned mines were turned into tourist attractions.

Similarly, he said, entrepreneurs here could think of how they could turn former tin mines into money-making concerns.

About 300 participants attended the seminar. PUMM, set up to help young entrepreneurs realise their dreams in the business world, is a voluntary multi-racial non-profit organisation that was established in 1993.
