IPOH: An economic and entrepreneurial unit will be set up to explore new trade sectors and create awareness among Indians on issues relating to the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the unit, which would be managed by the MIC-owned Social Strategic Foundation, would monitor the community's involvement in the economic sector.
Opening the Perak MIC delegates convention here, Samy Vellu said he would lead a delegation comprising MIC and corporate leaders to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Effendi Norwawi to discuss strategies and implementation of programmes for Indians to achieve 3% equity.
We will also organise a national economic convention to discuss ways to ensure the continued economic progress of the community, he said.
Deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam and incumbent vice-president Datuk G. Palanivel, who is expected to go for the number two post in the party polls in June, were also present.
Samy Vellu said the community's equity fell from 1.5% to 1.2% under the Eighth Malaysia Plan due to weaknesses in implementation and monitoring.
This is why more measures needed to be taken by the Government including the setting up of the National Implementation Task Force to monitor the execution of the 9MP, he added.
The delegates unanimously passed six resolutions that were tabled.
Among them was an appeal to the state government to make available ample low-cost houses and housing lots for squatters, to ensure fair distribution of wealth and to restructure the community.
The three other resolutions passed were related to the 9MP.
