KUALA LUMPUR: After conquering the entertainment industry, the short messaging service (SMS) has now moved on to the local political arena, with the launch of the nationwide SMS Poll for the MIC deputy president's post.
Conducted by the Malaysian Public Service Association (PPRM) and Nayagan bi-monthly magazine, the poll Who is the Favourable Candidate For the Post of MIC Deputy President will see people voting for either Datuk S. Subramaniam or Datuk G. Palanivel.
PPRM president P. Gunaseelan said that as the issue was currently one of the hottest topics in town, the poll would provide the opportunity for the public to share their opinion on the two candidates.
PPRM is an independent NGO and does not have any personal agenda in conducting the poll. Our intention is to find out the general feeling and sentiment of Malaysians, he told a press conference yesterday.
He said the SMS poll would be conducted in a fair, just, professional and friendly manner and it was not conducted to create disharmony among the MIC candidates and supporters.
Asked whether the SMS poll result would have any impact on the real election, Gunaseelan said: We are not trying to influence the real result, this is just to create interest as the final decision is still up to the MIC delegates.
The SMS poll which began yesterday will last until June 20, and it is open to all Malaysians.
The public can vote by typing Vote SS for Subramaniam or Vote GP for Palanivel and send their SMS to 32252.
The profile of both candidates can also be obtained by typing PROFILE SS (for Subramaniam) or PROFILE GP (Palanivel) and sending it to the same number.
The public can access current results which will be available every Thursday by typing STAT and sending it to 32252.
Each SMS will be charged 50 sen. Bernama
