IPOH: Factories in Perak must market their products via the Internet to be part of the global market, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

“We have 400 shoe factories and the operators should put their products on the Internet so that people from other countries can buy them,” he said.

He added that the operators could indicate the type and size of the shoes for sale.

“Similarly, the state can market its tourist spots through the Internet,” he said yesterday after opening the one-day MCA ICT Resource Centre Small and Medium Business ICT 2006 roadshow at Syuen Hotel here.

Tajol Rosli also said Perak should achieve its knowledge-economy status by 2010 or 2015.

“This is because (Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister) Datuk Kong Cho Ha is from Perak, and the International Trade and Industry Minister and her deputy are also from Perak,” he said.

“The person in charge of IT development in the state, Dr Zambry (Abd Kadir), has a PhD.

“If we cannot succeed, then there must be something wrong with us.”

Earlier, Kong urged small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) to look at IT as an investment, and not a cost.

“We often say that SMEs will not hesitate to buy a RM100,000 car, but will not invest RM30,000 to enable their business to have IT,” he said.

He noted that business today was done at the speed of light or at the click of a mouse.

“If we do not prepare ourselves, in no time we will see our profit margin decline and before long we will not be relevant anymore,” he added.
