SEREMBAN: It is time everyone gets serious about the Safe City concept introduced by the Government two years ago to keep Malaysians safe from crime, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.
There is awareness. But we are still looking at the progress, he told reporters yesterday after launching the Magnum Cares programme for Chinese New Year here.
In some places, it has been successful while some have been late in implementing it. Whatever it is, the time has come for everyone to be serious.
The Safe City is a combined initiative of residents, local councils and police.
It was adopted by the National Council for Local Goverment, which requires local authorities to take necessary measures, including installing lights at back lanes and fences to separate walkways from roads.
Ong, who is also MCA president, said apart from enforcement, the public needed to be more aware of how to protect themselves from crime.
He said state authorities should monitor the progress of local authorities carrying out the Safe City concept.
Ong added that all parties had to be serious about fighting crime and not have an attitude where they were serious about doing something when a crime happened but slowing down after that.
In his speech earlier, he said the rape and murder of marketing executive Chee Gaik Yap in Sungai Petani was cruel and such crimes should not be allowed to happen again.
He said that the MCA was working with government agencies to remind people to be careful.
