Perak to use phonics to improve pupils’ English

IPOH: Perak is introducing phonics in schools to improve the pupils' usage of English.

The move under the Developing Reading and Writing Skills (DRAWS) project involves 845 schools.

State Education director Mohamad Zakaria Mohd Noor said pupils would be taught using the Fun With Phonics series of books from Year One to Year Three.

Yau Sook Fun, an English teacher and headmistress of SK Sungai Dendang in Selama, is the author of the book.

“We will closely monitor the progress of the pupils to gauge the effectiveness of the project.

“At the end of the year, we will decide whether to continue with it,” Mohamad Zakaria said after Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali lasunched the book yesterday.

Perak Baiduri (the Association of the Wives of Elected Representatives and Department Heads) has sponsored over RM2mil for the books to be used by a pioneer batch of pupils in the next three years.
