KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese tourists visiting Malaysia next month will receive ang pows containing shopping vouchers and also be able to participate in a “millionaire” contest with lucky draw prizes totalling US$1mil (RM3.78mil).

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was one of the promotional packages planned by Tourism Malaysia to lure them here during the Chinese New Year.

Zahid said an advertising agency as well as a public relations company have been engaged to strengthen promotional efforts in China, which remained a priority market.

“We planned the promotions long ago but have to act now,” he said here yesterday.

Zahid added that Tourism Malaysia would intensify its promotion in stages to lure Chinese visitors.

He said the recent negative publicity surrounding the alleged mistreatment of several Chinese nationals should not be regarded as a “crisis.”

Zahid left for China last night as part of the delegation led by Home Minister Datuk Azmi Khalid to clear any misconception that Malaysia was profiling Chinese nationals, especially women, as being likely to indulge in vice.

A total of 229,384 Chinese visitors were recorded for the first nine months of this year.

Last year, there were 570,000 tourist arrivals from China.
