KOTA BARU: About 500,000 vehicles are expected to make their way to Kelantan next week in view of the festive break.

Federal Development Department director Shukri Salleh said they estimated a big balik kampung crowd due to the Deepavali and Hari Raya holidays as well as the school break.

He added that they also believe a large number of domestic tourists will visit the state during the same period.

Shukri said federal agencies and departments entrusted with road safety here must monitor traffic movement to keep the accident rate down.

Kelantan usually records a higher number of road accidents during the festive period, Shukri said during the launching of the state fire and rescue services department’s Raya operation yesterday.

Fire and Rescue Department director Yahya Madis said all fire stations would be involved in the operation which will end on Nov 13.

Between 10am and midnight, firemen in four-wheel drive vehicles would patrol main trunk roads and high-risk areas. A 24-hour operations room has been set up.

Yahya said many firemen had their leave frozen, adding that the move was to ensure the safety of road users.

He urged the public to take safety precautions to prevent fire outbreaks and to refrain from playing with firecrackers.

He added that they should switch off electrical appliances when leaving their homes.
