MALACCA: A former manager with Bumiputra Commerce Bank in Masjid Tanah has been charged with committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving fixed deposits totalling about RM18.05 mil.
Zainal Abidin Othman, 45, of Taman Merdeka, Batu Berendam, claimed trial in the Sessions Court yesterday to two charges of committing CBT between January 2003 and December 2004.
In the first charge, he allegedly committed CBT involving a fixed deposit of RM264,346.11 in 2003 in his capacity as a bank manager.
He also faced a second charge of committing the offence in 2004, this time involving a fixed deposit for RM17,789,489.04.

Zainal Abidin had earlier, in February, been charged with committing CBT involving RM167,334.39.
A charge under Sect 409 of the Penal Code carries a jail sentence of between two and 20 years, whipping or a fine.
DPP Azmi Ariffin asked for bail to be set at RM2mil yesterday in view of the large sum of money involved but Zainal Abidin pleaded for a lower bail, saying he needed to support his wife and school-going children.
Judge Sabariah Othman fixed bail at RM1mil with two sureties.
Hearing for both charges was fixed for Sept 21 and 22.
In an unrelated case in Kuala Lumpur, Bernama reported that a 28-year-old dispatch rider was charged in the magistrates court with murdering his wife following a misunderstanding on June 12.
Herman Aliseman from Taman Pusat Kepong, Jinjang, allegedly stabbed his wife, Noor Azura Abdul, 24, nine times with a “rambo” knife after he failed to persuade her not to seek a divorce from him.
No plea was recorded.
He allegedly committed the crime between 10.30pm and 11.15pm near the staircase of a house at No. 5711, Jalan 8/40, Taman Pusat Kepong.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Rahayu Ab Talib requested a date for mention since the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office had not received any report from the Chemistry Department.
It was reported that the two, who had a six-year-old son, were living separately pending the outcome of the woman’s application for divorce.
Magistrate Mohd Aimi Zaini Mohd Azhar fixed Aug 9 for mention of the case.
