PAS has invited Umno for a muzakarah (consultative meeting) to discuss Islam Hadhari and other issues on Islam.

PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat proposed that Umno be represented by party president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, saying that he was willing to lead the PAS side.

“The discussion can also touch on the economy, religion and other issues. It is logical for us to sit together to discuss matters that touch on the interpretation of religious matters,” he told reporters after the opening of the PAS muktamar.

Nik Aziz appears to have changed his mind about having a meeting with Umno; shortly before the general election last year, PAS had rejected a similar proposal from Umno.

He said PAS was also keen to discuss Islamic issues with non-Muslims, including their fears over hudud laws.

Earlier, in his keynote address, party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who opened the muktamar, said the party was willing to hold inter-faith dialogues with other religious groups.

Nik Aziz also said Kelantan PAS planned to organise a Malay Economic Congress in Kuala Lumpur soon. It would invite economists from Umno and other Barisan Nasional component parties, non-governmental organisations and academicians.
