On the auspicious occasion of the elevation of Miri to City status, it is with great pleasure that I offer warmest congratulations to all “anak Miri” as well as the people and the state government of Sarawak.

It is indeed a well-deserved honour to the city of Miri, the gateway to the northern Sarawak region, that boasts 19 ethnic cultures that have lived together harmoniously through the years; working shoulder to shoulder to develop the city to what it is today.

I understand that Miri City is focusing on its people in its branding campaign – “Saya Anak Miri” – which highlights the warmth, friendliness and harmonious co-existence of these unique ethnic cultures.

I also note that Miri City has made efforts to position itself for the future, and has already established Miri City Incorporated for that purpose, which will see the development of Miri City based on a marketing-centric approach with the participation of the government, the private sector and the people.

I am confident that Miri City, with its energy and dynamism, will continue to flourish and become an example of a model city of the 21st century.

Once again, my congratulations to all who have made this day a reality, and my best wishes for a bright future for Miri City, for Sarawak and for Malaysia.

Foreword by: YAB Datuk Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi Prime Minister Malaysia
