KUALA LUMPUR: Sirim Berhad has introduced new product certification labels with added security features.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who launched the new labels at the Sirim-Industry Night 2005 – First Session yesterday, said the labels would also incorporate the names of the related regulatory bodies.

The new labels for Sirim QAS International are in line with Sirim’s introduction of product certification schemes.

Sirim QAS International is the wholly owned subsidiary of Sirim Berhad and is the country’s leading testing, inspection and certification body for products by local and foreign companies from countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, China and Brunei.

Najib also witnessed Sirim QAS International’s appointment as the conformity assessment body by the Energy Commission for the Asean electrical electronic mutual recognition agreement.

The appointment means that Sirim QAS International's test reports on products will be accepted by Asean countries.

In his speech, Najib urged those involved in traditional industries such as the cottage industry to “have a new breath of life” by utilising new technologies and mechanisation without sacrificing their unique and special characteristics.

“Although money can be made through traditional ways it does not mean they cannot be innovative, as this is the only way for them to compete globally,” he added.
