DCA starts probe into chopper incident

CHUKAI: A three-member team from the Department of Civil Aviation has begun investigating the emergency landing of a Sikorsky S61N helicopter near Kerteh Airport on Saturday.  

The team, led by Idrus Abdul Rahman, started with an inspection of the site at 2.15pm yesterday. 

Officials of MHS Aviation Bhd, which owns the 35-year-old chopper, were also present. Capt Wan Kamil Wan Muda, 43, had just taken off when he was forced to land at a secondary jungle about 2km from the airport. 

He escaped unhurt, together with first officer Abdul Malik Mastuki, 32, and seven offshore workers attached with the Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and ExxonMobil oil platforms off the Terengganu coast. MHS officials, including chief executive officer Ma’sum Mahadi, were tight-lipped about the salvage operations.
