IPOH: Army ranger Kapt Mohd Taufik Jaffa @ Jaafar is looking forward to his wedding day now that a Sessions Court here has acquitted and discharged him of rape.

Mohd Taufik, 25, was initially charged with raping a 23-year-old woman at Room 6, Senior Officers Mess, Wisma Perwira, in Jalan Tambun here between 9pm on April 23, 2001, and 7pm the next day.

“I’m so relieved. I’ve been waiting for this case to be over to marry my fiancee from Johor.

“We’ve been engaged since early this year,” he told reporters outside the courtroom yesterday.

Judge Ridwan Ibrahim said the prosecution only proved that sexual intercourse, not rape, had taken place between Mohd Taufik and the woman.

GRATEFUL CLIENT: Kapt Mohd Taufik thanking his lawyers (from right) Mahinderjit Singh and Charan Singh at the Sessions Court in Ipoh yesterday.

“The woman's behaviour in between and after intercourse does not support her claims that she had not consented to the act.

“She did not scream or run away when she had the opportunity. She was not confined to the room.

“The case came to light as the woman's family failed to secure a settlement with the accused,” he said.

According to Mohd Taufik, the woman’s family had tried to get him to marry her following the incident.

“When I refused, she took the matter to the police,” said Mohd Taufik.
