KUALA LUMPUR: Family members of murdered executive secretary Siti Shamiza Abu Zarin caused a stir outside the Selayang magistrate’s court yesterday when they could not get a glimpse of the woman’s alleged killer.
They arrived at 3pm, some 45 minutes after the suspect had been brought into the court, where magistrate Nur Azhar Kassim granted a 10-day remand order on him.
Tension was high as the family waited outside the court for the suspect to be led out.
Their patience turned to frustration and then to anger when they learnt that the police had led out the suspect through another exit.
Siti Shamiza’s father, Abu Zarin Ishak, was heard hurling angry words at the police while holding back his tears, prompting several relatives to pull him back.
Her mother, housewife Kamsiah Mohd Akhir, pleaded to a policeman to let them see the suspect: “How would you feel if it was your daughter who had died?” she asked.
The policeman told the family that that they had to remove the suspect through a different route because the court compound was crowded and the police did not want anyone to lose control and cause needless harm to anybody.
After several minutes, the crowd, which also included curious onlookers, dispersed.
The 42-year-old suspect, who was clad in a grey T-shirt and black pants, arrived at the courthouse at 2.20pm.
Siti Shamiza, 30, was killed with a single shot to her chest after she had grappled with a gunman who was attempting to snatch her handbag at the car park of a hypermarket in Batu Caves on March 19.
Her assailant later shot and injured a passing motorist and threatened to shoot a shopper before escaping in the woman’s car.
Three days later, police recovered the stolen Perodua Kancil in Taman Seri Gombak.
Police arrested the suspect in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, on Saturday after he surrendered himself at a police station there.
