KUALA TERENGGANU: Umno members speaking at the state party convention have been told to feel free to raise any issues, even if they are uncomfortable to the party leadership.

In making the call, state Umno information chief Ahmad Shabery Cheek said:

“We welcome party members to act as the 'opposition' within the party.”

The two-day convention starts on Friday.

Ahmad Shabery said 850 members would attend the event, to be opened by state Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

“We are working hard to ensure the format of the convention is used as a benchmark should other states organise similar conventions later,” he said.

Ahmad Shabery also said the party had given PAS until next Sunday to reply to its proposal to have a debate on the issue of property assessment.

State PAS information chief Yahaya Ali said the party would study the proposal.
