Awards open to all TV and radio stations

KUALA LUMPUR: The Information Ministry's Anugerah Seri Angkasa 2004 awards will now have all television and radio stations in the country competing for 49 awards. 

Since its inception in 1972, the awards have been an annual event to honour RTM staff and those involved in the broadcasting industry. 

But from this year, the ministry has opened the awards to television stations such as TV3, NTV7, Astro and 8TV and radio operators such as, Best 104,, AMP, and 

The awards ceremony will be held at the Merdeka Hall of the Putra World Trade Centre on March 11 and March 12. 

Among the awards are those for best TV drama, best director, best teleplay, best TV actor, best TV actress, best TV performer, best radio deejay, best radio newsreader, best radio drama and best radio commentator.  

There is also a special award, Anugerah Khas Seri Angkasa, for individuals who have contributed significantly to the broadcasting industry.  

“Starting this year, we at the ministry want to make it the most prestigious event for the broadcasting industry in the country by getting all TV stations and radio operators to work together, “ said minister Datuk Seri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir when unveiling the awards trophy at Astro’s headquarters here on Thursday. 

“It has always been the Government’s goal to raise the quality of programmes aired on RTM and private stations.  

“One way to achieve this goal is to get everyone involved in organising a competition to honour the who’s who in the industry,” he said. 

Anugerah Seri Angkasa 2004 will be the Government's way of giving recognition to the broadcasting fraternity,” he added. 

Entries for the awards must have been aired on television or radio from Jan 1 to Dec 31 last year.  

As of last week, 409 entries have been received, of which 271 were for TV categories. 

The winners will receive a trophy, a certificate and other attractive prizes including cash.
