Net users paying RM92 for 20 minutes of porn

INTERNET users who download materials from pornographic websites are being “tricked” into paying about RM92 for 20 minutes' access, warned the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a Berita Harian report.

This happens when the websites’ host disconnects users from their local Internet service provider and automatically reconnects them to another line, which usually imposes premium or international rates.

Known as “Internet dumping” or “modem jacking,” this is usually done without the user's knowledge.

MCMC’s corporate communications department head Adelina Iskandar said the host might have asked the permission of the user but in small print which goes unnoticed.

“The user will only realise it when he receives a high telephone bill,” she said.

Reminding users to be careful when surfing adult websites, she said: “Parents must monitor their children’s surfing habits to prevent them from being exposed to inappropriate material.”

To prevent users from being victims, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, through its subsidiary TM Net Sdn Bhd, warns users of this problem in its bills and through advertisements, e-mails and media briefings.

Utusan Malaysia reported that “black snow” caused by open burning in sugarcane plantations in Chuping, Perlis, could have contributed to the rise in asthma cases in the state.

The state health department did not rule out this possibility as the number of asthma patients admitted to the Kangar Hospital was among the highest in the country.

However, state health director Dr Azmi Hashim said there was no scientific evidence to link the increase in asthma cases and the black dust released from open burnings in plantations owned by Perlis Plantations Berhad.

However, he said the department and Universiti Teknologi Mara were doing a study to find out if there was such a link.
