MALAYSIANS are rushing to buy cars before the Year of the Rooster flies in, the China Press reported.

Quoting Federation of Motorcar and Credit Companies of Malaysia president Datuk Tony Khor, the paper said the demand for new cars had increased by 10% and 50% in recent months.

He said the upward trend was due to consumers wanting new cars before the lunar year.

“Bookings were made at the end of last year for new cars,” he said, adding that many dealers were unable to cope with the demand.

“Most consumers are hoping to get their new cars before the arrival of the Rooster,” he said.

Khor said Proton cars topped the list of most-favoured cars, due to the competitive pricing.

“The pricing is attractive to those in the middle and lower income group,” he said.

Among imported cars, Toyota topped the list.

Sin Chew Daily quoted Bar Council vice-president Yap Yang Poh as saying that the agreement between the Government and PLUS Express Bhd, the toll operators of the North South Expressway, should be made an open document.

This would help to resolve the issue of PLUS fining motorist for staying too long on the highway, he said, adding that the idea of revealing the agreement was to make PLUS more transparent.

The move was recently made by PLUS to purportedly detect motorists who take a longer time than usual when travelling between two adjacent toll plazas along the highway.

PLUS alleged it was one way of weeding out those abusing the toll collection system.

On another matter, Nanyang Siang Pau reported that the new Road Safety Department would launch a road safety campaign on Feb 3 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

The department’s director-general, Suret Singh, said the RM300 on the spot compound for traffic offenders would be enforced during that period.

“If motorists refuse to pay the compound, they would need to appear in court the next day,” he said, adding that arrest warrants would be issued to those who do not turn up.
