KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS and Umno have agreed to hold a public debate on the reimposition of assessment in the state.

State PAS information chief Yahaya Ali said the party had proposed that the debate be held at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium after the Chinese New Year.

Yahaya said he and state PAS assistant secretary Abdul Wahid Endut met with state Umno information secretary Ngah Bidin and information bureau executive secretary Adam Sulong on the matter at Motel Desa here yesterday.

He said state Umno information chief Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who is also Kemaman MP, had challenged PAS to a debate last week.

Details such as the venue, speakers and moderator, he said, would be finalised after Ahmad Shabery returned from overseas on Friday.

“We will ensure our speakers are of the same standing as those from Umno,” he added.

When contacted, Adam confirmed the debate.

The state government announced the reimposition of assessment from this year. It was abolished by the former PAS administration in 2000.
